Instrument Rating Overview:

The instrument rating authorizes a pilot to fly in weather that is below the minimums for Visual Flight Rules (VFR).  This means that you may now fly in clouds and/or when the visibility is low.  In the Puget Sound area you know that often there is that low layer of clouds that would normally preclude you from flying or taking that trip that you have been planning.  Now, with the instrument rating you may now fly up through the clouds and on to your destination.

The minimum requirements for the Instrument Rating is 40 hours of flight instruction in basic flight, intercepting and navigating on airways and courses assigned by Air Traffic Control, holding patterns, and instrument approaches to airports.
Since instrument flight entails a lot more workload for the pilot, the FAA wants the pilots to really be skilled pilots first, and instrument pilots second.  To gain the basic flying skills they (the FAA) requires that you have 50 hours of cross country flight before you may take the practical test (check ride) for your instrument rating.  Be sure to include this extra rental time in your budget for the instrument rating.

Our syllabus is in three parts, 1) the basics, 2) cross country, and 3) preparation for the practical exam.  We actually budget for 44 hours total time for the instrument rating because the time on the ground taxiing, copying clearances, checking the airplane's systems is not really instrument training time.

We use airplanes that have the latest in technology for navigation meaning Global Positioning System (GPS) and therefore you have the skill set that is totally up to date.

As is consistent in all of our pricing structures we try to include everything you will likely need to keep the price realistic.  Here is the "real" cost:
